Spoken word is a performance art based on poems and written pieces. It promotes social and emotional learnings, like self-empowerment, while recognizing and embracing all personal narratives. Believe Limited used the basis of spoken word poetry to create a fun-filled weekend of writing, performance, self-advocacy, and community building for teens and young adults from the greater cystinosis community.

BUILT WITH GUIDANCE FROM LEADING SPOKEN WORD ARTISTS

Chicago’s top spoken-word artists and teachers were brought in to help Believe Limited facilitate writing and performance workshops about self-expression, culminating in a spoken word performance written and performed by participants living with cystinosis. By providing a safe space for creative expression, participants could step out of their comfort zone and foster new connections with other teens and young adults who understand what it’s like to live with cystinosis.
